There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino gambling is banned. Eight casinos are based in a relatively small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect location, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 1700, and although visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is correct of most border crossings.

The original Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau gambling den, contains 150 one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel compound that features many comforts aside from the gambling den, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and eighty eight tables.
